About BizName.au
BizName.au is a free business name generator built specifically for entrepreneurs in Australia and New Zealand. No signup, no fees, no data collection — just creative business names at the click of a button.
Why We Built BizName.au
We noticed a problem: Australian entrepreneurs were stuck using US-focused name generators that churned out names like "TechVenture LLC" and "Pacific Solutions Inc." — names that felt completely wrong for the Australian market.
None of them understood .com.au domains, none checked the ABN register, and none produced names with an Australian or Kiwi flavour. So we built the tool we wished existed.
BizName.au was created by Australian entrepreneurs, for Australian and New Zealand entrepreneurs. Every name strategy, every industry category, and every domain suggestion is tailored for our part of the world.
How the Generator Works
Our name generator runs entirely in your browser — no data is sent to any server. It uses an algorithm-based approach with six distinct naming strategies:
- Compound words — combining two meaningful words into one (e.g., SunPath, IronLeaf)
- Prefix/suffix patterns — adding familiar beginnings or endings (e.g., GoFern, Buildify)
- Portmanteau blending — merging parts of two words creatively (e.g., Techscape, Finova)
- Abstract creation — inventing entirely new, brandable words (e.g., Volaro, Zentiq)
- Descriptive combinations — pairing descriptive words with industry terms (e.g., Bright Build Co, Swift Trade)
- Aus/NZ flavoured names — incorporating local references and language (e.g., Banksia Digital, Koru Consulting)
Choose from 20+ industry categories — from cafés and construction to fintech and fitness — and the generator tailors every suggestion to your sector. You can generate unlimited names, completely free.
Registering a Business Name in Australia
Once you've found a name you love, you'll need to register it. Here's what you need to know:
ASIC Business Name Registration
- If your business name is different from your legal name, you must register it with ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission).
- Registration costs approximately $39 for 1 year or $92 for 3 years (check ASIC for current pricing).
- You'll need an ABN (Australian Business Number) before you can register a business name.
- You can apply for an ABN for free through the Australian Business Register.
Tips for a Smooth Registration
- Search before you commit — check the ASIC register and ABR to ensure your name isn't already taken.
- Avoid restricted words — words like "bank", "trust", "royal", and "ANZAC" require special approval.
- Secure your domain early — register your .com.au domain as soon as you've confirmed the business name is available.
- Consider a trademark — a registered business name does not give you trademark protection. For nationwide exclusivity, register with IP Australia.
Registering a Company in New Zealand
For New Zealand entrepreneurs, the process is slightly different:
- Register your company through the NZ Companies Office.
- Company registration costs approximately NZ$115 online.
- You can reserve a company name before incorporating — useful if you're still setting things up.
- Check the IPONZ trademark database for New Zealand trademark conflicts.
- If you plan to operate in both Australia and New Zealand, check registers in both countries — protections don't cross borders automatically.
